4th Fighter Wing highlights Domestic Violence Awareness Month

GOLDSBORO — Airmen assigned to the 4th Fighter Wing highlighted Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, DVAM was launched in October 1987 to connect and unite individuals and organizations dealing with domestic violence issues and to raise awareness. “The most effective form of prevention is education,” said Jerome Ellis, 4th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron family advocacy officer. “We want people to know about the issues, to know that what’s happening is not okay and to know that they are not alone.”

Events included a “purple up” event at the 4th Medical Group, a domestic violence awareness walk and posting informative signs around base. “The color purple was chosen to signify vigilance,” said Kimberly Lawrence, 4th Fighter Wing domestic abuse victim advocate. “We want to provide an opportunity for victims of domestic violence to recover and we want to raise awareness and encourage people to speak up.”

The Family advocacy program offers prevention, education and outreach services against child and spousal abuse

“Family advocacy is one of those programs where you have be prepared with all the tools necessary to not only be there for someone, but give them the support they need to persevere through this time,” said Col. Lucas Teel, 4th Fighter Wing commander. “The more that we can get out there and show people the value Family Advocacy bring, the better.”
