Mount Olive men’s tennis falls to Charleston

MOUNT OLIVE – Facing the reigning Atlantic Region champions, the Trojans fell by a 4-2 margin versus Charleston (W. Va.) in non-conference play at John Neal Walker Tennis Center in the final match of the fall season on Oct. 23.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive men’s tennis team dropped to 0-1 in dual match play after competing in three individual events in the fall. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improved to 2-0 overall after posting a 22-3 record last year and reaching the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.

Charleston swept the doubles session on Sunday to secure the doubles point. At the first slot, junior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Daniel Hammond suffered a 7-5 loss against Lennert Stevens and Jowan Rawson. Junior Adam Ibrahim and senior Victor Nunez dropped a 7-6 (7-4) contest at the second position to Farhaan Patrawala and Marcelo Mifano Pinto. At third doubles, freshman Bram Poel and sophomore Elios Briand fell by a 6-4 margin to Jorge Perez Diaz and Krish Patel.

The Golden Eagles won four of the five singles match to secure the victory. de Oliveira suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Perez Diaz at the first slot, while Nunez registered a 6-3, 6-3 win at second singles over Patrawala. Hammond collected a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the third position against Rawson and senior Israel Rodriguez Rojas dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match in the fourth slot to Patel. In fifth singles, Ibrahim fell by a 6-4, 6-4 margin to Mifano Pinto, while freshman Kabir Chhabria held a 6-4, 4-2 advantage in an unfinished match in the sixth position.
