Charleston defeats Mount Olive in women’s tennis

MOUNT OLIVE – In the final match of the fall portion of the schedule, the Trojans fell by a score of 4-2 against Charleston (W. Va.) on Oct. 23 in non-conference play at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women’s tennis program dropped to 0-2 this season in dual match play. The Trojans competed in five events this fall, including three individual events. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improved to 3-0 overall after claiming 19 wins last year and finishing runner-up in the Atlantic Region.

The Trojans claimed the doubles point after winning a pair of matches in the session. In the first position, senior Liza Voloshyna and junior Nele Weber earned a 6-4 win over Alyssa Cameron and Sofiia Krasikova. Senior Ingrid Montserrat and freshman Oriana Izarra posted a 6-4 victory in the second slot versus Prinkle Singh and Sara Martinez. In third doubles, junior Jessica Aylward and freshman Laura Server fell by a 6-1 margin to Barbara Balancho and Harriet Glaves.

Charleston rallied in singles action, winning four of the five matches to claim the victory. Montserrat was downed by Singh 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-0 in the first slot and Voloshyna suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss versus Krasikova in second singles. In the third position, Izarra secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Larsson, while Weber fell by a 6-0, 6-0 margin in the fourth slot to Cameron. Servien dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to Martinez and Aylward trailed 6-2, 3-2 at sixth singles in an unfinished match.
