UMO baseball team earns academic honor

MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive baseball program has garnered the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award presented by Sports Attack.

To be eligible for the award, teams must hold a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the 2022-23 academic year. The honor is available to all NCAA, NAIA, junior college and high school baseball programs. The ABCA recognized nearly 800 programs from across the country this summer, including more than 450 collegiate programs.

The Trojans were one of only three Conference Carolinas teams to be recognized by the ABCA this season. The baseball program boasted a 3.37 GPA during the fall semester before posting a 3.24 in the spring term.

The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation’s oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA’s awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
