Choboy named NCBWA National Hitter of the Week

MOUNT OLIVE – Following a breakout performance at the Conference Carolinas tournament, University of Mount Olive graduate student Landon Choboy was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Hitter of the Week.

The Conference Carolinas Tournament MVP, Choboy delivered one of the best individual performances in recent tournament history after posting a .435 batting average with five homers, 21 RBI and eight runs scored in 23 at-bats. He produced three multi-hit games and tallied at least four RBI in four consecutive elimination games. On Friday, Choboy finished three for five with four RBI and one run scored in a 14-8 win over Francis Marion. The following day, he went three for four at the plate, highlighted by a grand slam in the first inning in a 13-2 run-rule victory versus Belmont Abbey. On Championship Sunday, Choboy delivered a three-homer performance with nine RBI in a 21-1 win over UNC Pembroke before producing a two-run home run and four RBI in a 13-3 victory against FMU in the title game.

Choboy is the fourth Conference Carolinas student-athlete to capture national Player of the Week laurels from the NCBWA. Christian Jayne of UNC Pembroke was named the National Hitter of the Week on Feb. 15, while teammate Branden Kunz was tabbed as the National Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 22. Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Dale Francis Jr. of Erskine was named the National Hitter of the Week on Mar. 22.
