Burnette sets new school record in the 200 meters

MOUNT OLIVE (May 14) – Senior Justen Burnette broke his own all-time school record with a first-place finish in the 200 meters on May 14, as the Trojans closed the regular season with the Final Qualifier at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

Burnette set a new school record in the 200 meters with a blistering pace of 20.73 seconds to claim first place in the event and hit the NCAA provisional standard. With his time set in the final meet, he jumps to 11th in NCAA Division II to secure his place at nationals.

Sophomore Riley Willcox finished second overall with a personal record in the 800 meters after crossing the line in 1 minute, 55.94 seconds, which was the seventh-best time in UMO history.

Fellow sophomore Jaleal Hamlett placed second in the triple jump after reaching a distance of 14.15 meters after hitting his personal record in the event on Saturday (14.77m).

Senior Joshua Faison recorded a stellar performance in the discus with a mark of 52.60 meters to take second overall. He currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division II and will compete at the 2023 DII outdoor championships at the end of May.

Sophomore Israel Long secured second place in the hammer throw in the final home meet of the season with a mark of 52.33 meters. Fellow sophomore Nicholas Cloud registered a second-place finish in the shot put following a toss of 15.85 meters on Sunday.

The 2023 championships will take place on Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27 in Pueblo, Colo.
