Izarra, Montserrat selected all-conference in women’s tennis

MOUNT OLIVE – University of Mount Olive freshman Oriana Izarra and senior Ingrid Montserrat earned all-conference accolades from the Conference Carolinas last Thursday following the conclusion of the regular season.

Izarra garnered first-team status as a freshman after an outstanding first year with the program, as she was named Freshman of the Month twice and received a Player of the Week honor. Montserrat was selected to the all-conference team for the third time in her career, including her pair of second team selections. The Trojans have featured at least two all-conference honorees each season dating back to the 2011-12 season.

Izarra, from Valencia, Venezuela, played primarily at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles this season. At the conclusion of the regular season, she boasted a 13-7 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play in singles action, including a pair of wins at the second position. Entering the conference tournament, Izarra was on a five-match winning streak and had won nine of her last 10 matches. Playing alongside Montserrat in doubles, the duo produced an impressive 17-4 mark and finished undefeated in conference action with a 9-0 record.

A native of Tarragona, Spain, Montserrat collected her third all-conference honor while being named to the second team this season. She played in the first position all season for UMO in singles while playing No. 2 doubles a majority of the year. Montserrat posted a 5-3 record in conference play at No. 1 singles while also winning 10-straight matches with Izarra in doubles play ahead of the conference tournament.
