Wayne County Public Library hosts event for El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros

The Wayne County Public Library will host El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) on Saturday, April 29 from noon-3 p.m. at the Maxwell Center.

GOLDSBORO — Wayne County Public Library has received a Grassroots Art Program grant through the Arts Council of Wayne County for the third year in a row to host an event for El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) on Saturday, April 29 from noon-3 p.m. at the Maxwell Center.

This event, part of a nationally recognized initiative commonly known as Día, is a celebration of children, families and reading, and emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. “This event will allow families in our community to come together to celebrate our shared love of reading, learning, and fun. Attendees will experience different cultures through dance, storytelling, crafts, music, and Virtual Reality activities. There is a lot of diversity in Wayne County, and this gives us a chance to learn about different traditions in our community while having a great time,” said Children’s Department Head Caroline Clucas.

The event has expanded focus since last year, and will concentrate on celebrating France, Taiwan and Venezuela in a festive, fair-type atmosphere. Working with several wonderful community partners, the library has chosen performers for the event, including a Venezuelan singer and dance group and a storyteller who will play music and tell stories from the three countries highlighted this year. In addition to these performers, there will be free face painting, balloon animals, quilt making, popcorn and a chance to read with Dolly the therapy dog. Attendees will also receive a goodie bag which will include a free book donated by Book Rich Environment.
