Trojans among top nine in Southeast Region rankings

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive women’s tennis team is listed among the nine Southeast Region teams currently in consideration for NCAA postseason play according to the first set of regional rankings unveiled by the NCAA Division II Tennis Committee.

New this year, the first set of regional rankings are listed in alphabetical order with no numerical ranking. The committee will rank the teams in numerical order for the first time with the second set of regional rankings, which will be announced Wednesday, April 12.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Southeast Region consists of the Conference Carolinas, the South Atlantic Conference and the Peach Belt Conference.

All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the next four highest-ranked teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids. Updated regional rankings will be released every Wednesday until the conclusion of the season. The official release of the 48-team field for the 2023 NCAA Tournament will be announced on NCAA.com.

Mount Olive was the only program from the Conference Carolinas to appear in the initial rankings from the NCAA. The SAC had four representatives as Anderson, Catawba, Newberry and Wingate all made the list. Rounding out the rankings from the PBC were Columbus State, Flagler, Georgia College and North Georgia.

Mount Olive holds a 9-6 record in Division II contests and has the sixth-toughest strength of schedule in the region (.562). The Trojans are seeking their third straight regular season championship and second consecutive tournament title.
