Mount Olive competes at Surratt Memorial

MONROE – In their final preparation for the league championship, The Trojans placed No. 11 in the team standings on March 21 at the Jerry Surratt Memorial Invitational hosted by Wingate.

The University of Mount Olive women’s golf team posted a 122-over 986 (340-322-324) while playing the par-72 Stonebridge Golf Course. The host Bulldogs earned the tournament title via a scorecard playoff after carding a 48-over 912 (314-305-293) with the lowest final round. Carson-Newman placed second in the team standings with a 48-over 912 (310-303-299) and West Florida ranked third with a 59-over 923 (305-310-308). The 14-team field was comprised of mainly Conference Carolinas and South Atlantic Conference programs with four ranked teams.

Junior Victoria Morelli paced the team and tied for 28th overall on the individual leaderboard with a 22-over 238 (80-80-78). She played the front nine at a collective six-over while tying for the eighth in the field with 35 pars.

Senior Elise Davies shot a 30-over 246 (86-81-79) and tied for 41st place at the event with 27 pars and a pair of birdies. Fellow senior Emma Leclercq tied for 44th overall after shooting a 31-over 247 (86-76-85) with 25 pars and two birdies. She recorded the lowest round of the tournament for UMO with a four-over 76 on Tuesday during her second round. Freshman Violette Daudin carded a 42-over 258 (90-86-82) to tie for 59th place and closed out the back nine in round three at three-over. Senior Grace Olmstead rounded out the team scorers after tying for 69th overall with a 52-over 268 (87-89-92) behind 16 pars made.

Wingate junior Jess Brown claimed medalist honors by four strokes after firing a one-over 217 (73-75-69) with six birdies in the final round.
