Jeffries, Johnson win weekly honors

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive baseball program swept the weekly league honors from the Conference Carolinas on Tuesday afternoon, as junior Dylan Jeffries was named Player of the Week and senior Erik Johnson received Pitcher of the Week.

Jeffries finished the week with a .438 batting average (7 for 16) with three homers, five RBI, 10 runs scored and four stolen bases. He tallied five extra-base hits and three walks while batting in the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Jeffries went 3 for 5 with a solo homer, three runs scored, and a stolen base in an 18-4 win over No. 14 Wingate. In a series win at Chowan, he finished a combined 4 for 11 with two homers, four RBI, seven runs scored and three stolen bases. Jeffries currently holds an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base in all 20 contests.

A 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher, Johnson delivered a 13-strikeout performance on Saturday afternoon in a 9-1 win over Chowan. On the mound, he tossed a complete-game win (2-1) while surrendering just one run on three hits over 7 innings pitched. Johnson set down the side in order four times while forcing four flyouts and four groundouts against the Hawks. This season, he paces the team with 34 strikeouts and holds his opponents to a .168 batting average at the plate.
