Asoburuenwu, Keck win weekly league honors

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive women’s track & field team swept the opening outdoor weekly accolades from the Conference Carolinas, as freshman Chianel Asoburuenwu was named Track Athlete of the Week and senior Mary Brigid Keck was picked as the Track Athlete of the Week.

UMO began the 2023 outdoor slate last weekend at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational by establishing 16 conference qualifying marks, four first-place finishes and two NCAA provisional standards.

A freshman sprinter from Raleigh, Asoburuenwu was a headliner for the Trojans after setting an NCAA standard in her debut in outdoor track & field in the 200 meters after crossing the line in 23.91 seconds. She secured first overall in the event and established a new school record, which had stood since 2017. Additionally, Asoburuenwu registered a first-place finish in the 100 meters after posting a time of 11.98 seconds, which was the third-fastest in program history.

Both times currently rank first in the Conference Carolinas and she is one of five athletes in Division II to hit an NCAA standard in the 200 meters.

A senior thrower from Newark, Ohio, Keck established her first NCAA standard of the outdoor season in the hammer throw. She claimed first place at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational following her toss of 53 meters on her second attempt. Keck is one of two athletes in the country to reach the NCAA provisional mark and holds the second-best distance in all of NCAA Division II this year.
