Faison, Hart sweep weekly conference honors

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men’s track & field team swept the initial outdoor weekly accolades from the Conference Carolinas, as senior Joshua Faison was named Field Athlete of the Week and freshman Jason Hart was chosen as the Track Athlete of the Week.

The Trojans opened the 2023 outdoor season last weekend at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational by setting 21 conference qualifying marks, three first-place finishes and a trio of NCAA provisional standards.

A 6-foot-5 senior thrower from Clayton, Faison surpassed a pair of conference and school records in the initial outdoor meet of the year. In the shot put, he tossed a distance of 16.88 meters to eclipse his previous league record and take first place. Faison also placed first overall in the discus throw with another conference record after posting a mark of 53.17 meters. Both distances achieved on Saturday were NCAA provisional marks and he is the two-time defending league champion in the events.

A freshman sprinter from Richmond, Va., Hart established the fastest times in the Conference Carolinas this year in the 100 and 200 meters following the opening weekend of the outdoor season at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational. In the 100 meters, he secured a second-place finish and the seventh-fastest time in program history after crossing the line in 10.84 seconds to qualify for the league championships. Hart also qualified in the 200 meters following a third-place finish with a time of 21.77 seconds, which ranks fifth all-time at UMO.
