Mount Olive sweeps tri-meet at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Behind a combined 13 victories, the University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling team swept a tri-meet on Jan. 29 with wins over Montreat and Limestone.

With the victories, the Trojans improved to 7-3 overall in their inaugural season as a program. Mount Olive achieved a dual meet win over a competitive Limestone team while collecting its second win over Montreat this year. The Trojans defeated Montreat 37-5 and Limestone 22-20.

Against Montreat, the dual was tied at 5-5 after each side claimed a forfeit in the opening three matches, while both teams forfeited the 109-weight class. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez secured the first head-to-head win at 123 with a 13-3 technical fall. Junior Brooke Hermel (130) followed with a victory via fall before freshman Chloe Lawler (136) delivered a 10-0 technical fall. Fellow freshman Skyelar Smith at 143 produced a 10-0 technical fall before UMO collected three straight forfeits to secure a 37-5 win.

Against Limestone, the match was knotted at 5 after pair of forfeits before the Trojans rattled off three consecutive wins. Rodriguez put together a dominant performance with a 12-2 technical fall  before Hermel won by pin in the 130 weight class. Lawler increased the advantage to 17-7 via a 4-2 decision at 136. The Saints responded with three straight wins, including two falls and a decision, to take a 20-18 lead. In the final match at 191, freshman Jada Arnold secured the match-winning result with an 11-0 technical fall to win the dual meet, 22-20.
