UMO competes at Robert Horton Memorial

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Trojans featured eight wrestlers in seven separate weight classes in the individual competition on Jan. 22 in the annual Robert Horton Memorial Open.

The University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling team had a trio of wrestlers collect at least two wins in their respective weight classes. The event featured three ranked teams, including No. 2 King, No. 7 Presbyterian and No. 13 New Jersey City.

In the 143 weight class, freshman Skyelar Smith registered a 3-2 record and advanced to the consolation semifinals. She secured a win via fall before suffering a loss by pin to enter the consolation bracket. Smith responded with a win via fall before collecting another win by a 4-1 decision. In the consolation semifinals, she fell by a 10-0 technical fall.

Junior Brooke Hermel posted a 2-2 mark in the 123-weight class and opened the competition with a bye. She delivered a win via fall before suffering a loss in the quarterfinals by fall to enter the consolation bracket. Hermel answered with a 10-0 technical fall but fell in the following round  by a 10-0 technical fall.

Freshman Gracie Cordasco also recorded a 2-2 record while competing at 116. She opened the day with an 8-6 decision before suffering a loss via fall. Cordasco responded with a pin in the consolation bracket but dropped out in the next round by fall.

Freshmen Chloe Lawler and Isabella Kessey each finished with a 1-2 record with wins coming via fall in the consolation bracket.
