Harris is Defensive Player of the Week

MOUNT OLIVE – After averaging 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and one steal per game last week, University of Mount Olive women’s basketball junior Laila Harris was named the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week by the league office on Dec. 12.

Harris led the Trojans to a 2-0 record in non-conference play last week after averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and two assists per game. She collected six rebounds and two blocks while scoring 13 points in a 67-50 victory versus Mars Hill on Tuesday. Harris finished the week with a career-high 20 points on 10 of 17 shooting with five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists while playing 35 minutes in a 59-58 win over Virginia State on Saturday.

A native of Englewood, N.J., she ranked second in the conference with 14 blocks while sitting among the top five in the league in scoring and shooting percentage. Harris earned the defensive accolade from the conference for the first time in her career.
