Mount Olive competes at ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive men’s tennis team competed at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships over the weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

The Trojans featured four doubles pairings at the event in the 48-team field, while also having four individuals participated in singles with nearly 100 players in the tournament.

In doubles competition, junior Guilherme Zotin de Olivera and freshman Daniel Hammond collected a 8-6 win in the opening round over Zachary Cox and Rufus Plane of Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday. The duo was defeated 8-4 the following day in the round of 32 to the top-seeded doubles team in the tournament from Columbus State, Tommaso Schold and Pietro Martinetti.

The three remaining doubles team from Mount Olive suffered opening-round losses on Friday.

In singles play, Hammond captured a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the initial round over Marcel Schomburg of Newberry before falling 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32 to Fernando Bulnes Garrorena of Flagler.

Senior Victor Nunez battled to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the opening round over Hannes Tylehed of Barton and suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss on Saturday to No. 32 seeded Matthew De Groot of Lander.

de Oliveira fell in the first round of play by a 6-3, 6-3margin to Xaveam Van Wijk of Belmont Abbey before securing back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket to finish with event with a 2-1 record.

Senior Isreal Rodriguez Rojas dropped a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 decision to Carlo Rosellini in the round of 128 before registering a 6-2, 6-2 win in consolation play over Rhys Halcrow of King.
