UMO women’s tennis competes in regional championships

SUMTER, S.C. (Sept. 25) – In the final individual competition of the fall, the University of Mount Olive women’s tennis team played in the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships in Sumter, S.C. at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

UMO featured three doubles teams  in a field of 48 teams, while five players competed in singles action with just under 100 student-athletes in the tournament.

In doubles play, senior Liza Voloshyna and junior Nele Weber posted an 8-4 win in the opening round on Friday over Mollie Edge and Summer Reeves of Carson-Newman. On Saturday, the tandem fell by an 8-6 margin to the No. 5 seeded double team of Mariana Ramirez and Luciana Galves of Columbus State. The two remaining doubles teams for the Trojans both suffered losses in their opening matches of the tournament.

In singles competition, freshman Oriana Izarra advanced to the round of 32 and posted a 2-1 mark in her first appearance at the regional tournament. She battled to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Millie Elsborg of Lander before defeating No. 16 seed Teodora Stefanovic of Erskine by a 7-5, 6-3 margin. On Saturday afternoon, Izarra was eliminated from the competition after suffering a 6-1, 6-2 loss to No. 32 seed Suzuka Sambyakugari of Wingate.

Weber posted a 2-2 record after claiming a 7-6, 6-2 win against Emma Bentz of Erskine, but dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the round of 64 to No. 6 seed Dana Heimen of Flagler. In the consolation bracket, she notched a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory over Tonya Glogowski-Watson of Converse before falling by a score of 6-0, 6-1 to finish out the event.

Freshman Laura Servien registered a 2-1 record at the regional event after posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory versus Glogowski-Watson of Converse, but dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to No. 8 seed Eryka Kruk of Flagler in the round of 64. She secured a 6-4, 6-4 win in a consolation round against Emily Bush of Young Harris on Saturday.

Senior Ingrid Montserrat suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss in the initial round of play before posting a 1-1 record in the consolation bracket. She recorded a 4-6, 6-1, (11-9) victory over Roberta Armani of Lander before falling by a 6-4, 1-6 (10-3) margin to Chelsea Seidewitz of Francis Marion.

Voloshyna fell in the opening round of play in singles action by a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 margin to Seidewitz of Francis Marion on Friday.
