Two Trojans earn academic all-district honors

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men’s tennis program featured a pair of players named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, as juniors Diego Ortega Cadahia and Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira earned the honor.

The 2023 Academic All-District Men’s Tennis Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes men’s tennis honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

With this honor, both individuals are eligible for consideration on the CSC Academic All-American Team that will be announced at the end of the month.

A native of Madrid, Spain, Ortega Cadahia competed primarily at No. 2 doubles alongside teammate Adam Ibrahim. The duo registered six total wins throughout the season, including three victories in conference action. He also posted a 3-1 mark in singles from the sixth position behind a 2-1 record in league play. He boasts a 3.85 grade-point-average while pursuing a degree in sport management.

From Rio Claro, Brazil, de Oliveira played No. 1 singles and doubles during the 2022-23 campaign for the Trojans. He produced a 9-9 record in the first position while holding a 5-3 mark in league action. In doubles play with teammate Daniel Hammond, the duo delivered an impressive 14-3 overall record, including a seven-match winning streak to end the year, while going 4-1 in conference play. He maintains a 3.79 GPA with a double major in accounting and finance.

To qualify for the academic all-district honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and in athletic eligibility, maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA or higher, and have played at least 50 percent of the team’s matches. Additionally, each institution is capped at four nominees in the sport of men’s tennis.
