No. 25 Trojans cruise past NGU on Senior Night

MOUNT OLIVE – On the night the program recognized 15 seniors, the No. 25 ranked University of Mount Olive women’s lacrosse team defeated North Greenville by a score of 25-5 on April 15 at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

With the win, the Trojans registered their 32nd straight conference win and now stand at 10-5 overall with a 7-0 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Crusaders fell to 9-6 overall with a 6-2 mark in conference play.

The first goal of the contest was scored at the 14:11 mark when graduate student Ali Davis passed the ball to teammate Zoe Dougherty, 1-0. About two minutes later, senior Ellie Fedorowski put one in the back of the cage, 2-0. Shortly after, graduate student Meagan Maxwell netted another goal, 3-0. Just 37 seconds later, graduate student Morgan Paige put one past the keeper, 4-0. At the 8:40 mark, NGU scored its initial goal of the contest, 4-1. After dodging past the defense, Paige scored her second goal of the game, 5-1. The Crusaders were able to score back-to-back goals to bring the game within two, 5-3. In a man-down opportunity, senior Peyton Youngblood scored her 12th goal of the season, 6-3. Closing the first quarter, Davis and Dougherty scored to extend the lead, 8-3.

At the start of the second quarter, senior Bria Hamilton capitalized on two man-up opportunities and scored consecutive goals, 10-3. At 5:27, Davis scored her second goal of the game, 11-3. After, Fedorowski scored her second goal of the game, 12-3. With three minutes left in the first half, North Greenville was able to score to cut into the deficit, 12-4. Scoring her third goal of the game, Dougherty closed the second quarter by putting one past the keeper, 13-4.

At the start of the third quarter, graduate student Margot Coomes netted the goal that started the running clock rule, 14-4. With a seven-goal run by the Trojans, Mount Olive was able to extend the lead to 21-4. Graduate student Emery Kennedy was able to net her first goal of the game, 15-4. At the 9:42 mark, Dougherty scored her fourth goal of the game, 16-4. Scoring at the top of the eight, junior Logan Hibbard recorded back-to-back goals, 18-4. Closing the third quarter, Hamilton and Davis scored two more goals stretching the lead by 16, 20-4.

In the final frame of the game, Fedorowski scored her third goal of the game, a season-high, 21-4. At the 9:05 mark of the fourth, the Crusaders scored their last goal of the contest, 21-5. With three man-up opportunities, UMO was able to go three for three with goals by Kennedy, Paige and graduate student Alexis Stanley, 24-5. With two seconds left, Davis scored her 56th goal of the season, sealing the 25-5 win.

Davis finished the game with four goals, one assist and a draw control. Dougherty finished the game with a season-high of four goals, four draw controls and a ground ball.

Goalkeeper Claire Hagen had five saves on 11 shots on goal while playing 43:48 minutes. Falon Costigan saw 16 minutes in between the pipes while also collecting a save in goal.
