Wayne County Public Schools to host “Showcase of Schools”

GOLDSBORO — Are you a renter or a homebuyer considering moving to a new area in Wayne County and want to learn more about the schools in that community? Is your child transitioning to a new school in the fall? Are you considering WCPS as a potential educational opportunity for your child? Are you a realtor, property manager, employer or job recruiter and want more information about the public schools?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will not want to miss the Wayne County Public Schools first-ever “Showcase of Schools” on Saturday, May 6.
“Wayne County Public Schools offers the widest variety of PreK-12 program offerings in Wayne County,” said WCPS Executive Director of Community Engagement and Student & Family Support Ken Derksen. “All of our schools have great things happening every day. The ‘Showcase of Schools’ will give new, current and prospective families, as well as realtors and others, a one-stop opportunity to learn more about the school district’s 33 schools and the various programming and opportunities that each has to offer.”
The WCPS “Showcase of Schools” will be held at the Maxwell Center, located at 3114 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Each school will have representatives on site. In addition to providing information about core academic curriculums, each school will have information about their arts programs, Career & Technical Education programs, athletics, various STEM initiatives and opportunities and more.
“We want attendees to meet with school leaders and staff, ask questions, receive in-depth information about each school, and feel confident in any education transition or decision being made that will impact their child,” Derksen said. “They will also see firsthand the talent and exceptional quality of the student work and programming happening across the schools with various exhibits displayed around the campus. In addition, special band and chorus performances will be held throughout the two-hour event to showcase the amazing work happening in the area of performing arts.”
Attendees will be able to learn about more unique school offerings available to students, such as Chinese and Spanish dual language immersion programs, Public Safety (EMT, Law Enforcement, and Firefighter) programs, Drone Technology, JROTC and the Teacher Cadet program. Each high school will provide information about available career pathways which lead to career certifications and college opportunities.
Important information about the school district’s Exceptional Children Program and Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted programs will be available. The three non-traditional school options, Wayne Early/Middle College High School, Wayne School of Engineering, and the new Wayne School of Technical Arts will also have information for interested attendees.
“Along with our families, we look forward to helping realtors and property management companies become more informed about all of our different school offerings so they can better assist their clients in finding their ideal rental opportunities or their forever home,” Derksen said. “Understanding academic curriculums, extra-curricular programs, unique program offerings and athletic opportunities within our schools will also benefit attending employers and job recruiters in their efforts to attract new employees and their families to Wayne County.”
Families wanting more information about their current school or the next school in their child’s feeder pattern are also welcome and encouraged to attend the WCPS “Showcase of Schools.”
