UMO records split at Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Despite home runs in both contests, the Trojans posted a doubleheader split at Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action on March 24, suffering a 7-1 loss in game 1 before capturing a 4-2 win in game 2.

With the split, the University of Mount Olive softball team stands at 15-13 overall with a 4-4 record in conference play. The league standings remain crowded with the top half holding four wins in conference action. Meanwhile, Emmanuel sits at 16-14 this season with a 5-3 mark in league play.

In game 2, the Trojans jumped ahead on a solo homer by junior Ashlyn Porter, her sixth of the year, to take a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second. In the next inning, UMO drew back-to-back walks with two outs before junior Cana Shrock ripped an RBI double to left field to extend the lead, 2-0. After a scoreless fourth frame, junior Courtlynn Cooney led off the fifth with an infield single before stealing second. Following a hit by pitch, Porter and junior Kylie Emanuele delivered a pair of RBI singles, 4-0. The Lions managed to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh, but Mount Olive secured the 4-2 road win.

Senior Lauren King improved to 3-4 after yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings pitched. Freshman Callie Thorton earned the save (1) after recording the final two outs of the contest.

In game 1, both sides struggled to find base runners in the opening three innings. To lead off the fourth, sophomore Alyssa Smothers belted a solo homer to left field to break the deadlock, 1-0. Emmanuel immediately countered with an RBI single in the bottom half, 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions brought across six runs on four hits, highlighted by a base-clearing three-run double. The Trojans left just four runners on base, as Emmanuel collected the win, 7-1.

Junior Hannah Killough suffered the loss (8-5) after surrendering seven runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
