GOLDSBORO – Derrick Dabney is the recipient of a 2023 North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award.
Dabney, a Raleigh resident, is a second-year student at Wayne Community College. He is enrolled in the Aviation Systems Technology program and has already earned a Federal Aviation Administration Aviation Mechanic – Airframe Certificate.
“Derrick approaches everything he does with excellence as his goal,” said WCC Aviation Instructor Mike Crumpler, who nominated him for the honor. “Derrick not only does very well with the academic side of our program, he approaches the hands-on component with focus and determination.”
Dabney holds a 4.0 grade point average while working part-time for a company that operates turbine aircraft. The NCCCS award is designed to honor a student at each of the 58 constituent community colleges who has set the highest possible goals and attained the pinnacle of academic success. Dabney will be presented a certificate and a medallion at WCC’s Student Recognition Ceremony next month.
Also honored will be finalists for the award Ashelie Jones, an Associate Degree Nursing major from Fremont; Zoie Outlaw, a Dental Assisting major from Kinston and James Bailey, an Associate in Science major from Fremont.
