Trojans leap to No. 18 in latest national poll

MOUNT OLIVE — After winning four of five games last week, the University of Mount Olive baseball team leaped five positions to No. 18 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30 poll.

The previous week, the Trojans registered a 4-1 record, including a nationally-ranked win over No. 14 ranked Wingate by an 18-4 margin. Mount Olive followed up with its third straight conference series win after taking two of three on the road at Chowan. UMO currently sits third in the Conference Carolinas standings. In addition to last week’s performance, the Trojans swept the league honors as junior Dylan Jefferies was named Player of the Week and senior Erik Johnson received Pitcher of the Week.

Defending national champion North Greenville maintained the top spots in the poll following a 20-2 start to the season, including an 11-1 record in conference play. Tampa remained second in the ranking with a 17-3 mark coming off a series sweep of Embry-Riddle, while Angelo State leaped one spot the third behind a 21-3 record this year. Columbus State (17-4) dropped one position to fourth and Cal. St. San Bernardino rounded out the top five.

The Trojans were one of six teams from the Southeast Region to be featured in the latest poll, including three programs from the Conference Carolinas.
