UMO opens the spring golf season

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Mount Olive men’s golf team finished 12th in the team standings on Feb. 28 while competing in its first event of 2023, the Spring Bulldog Clash hosted by Barton.

The Trojans placed 12th in the field of 22 teams after carding a 46-over 886 (287-302-297) while competing at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. The host Bulldogs earned the tournament title by nine strokes with a four-under 836 (279-272-285) after featuring three golfers in the top five. Belmont Abbey finished second in the team standings with a five-over 845 (279-287-279), and USC-Aiken placed third overall with a seven-over 847 (277-287-283).

Freshman Jonas Arnstrom Bakker led the team and leaped two positions on the final day to tie for 31st overall with a seven-over 217 (70-75-72) with 33 pars and eight birdies. Senior Cade Hancock made his first appearance of the year with the Trojans and tied for 52nd place with an 11-over 221 (72-73-76) after leading the team with 10 birdies while adding 29 pars over the two-day competition.

Freshman Max Lindblad placed four slots behind in a tie for 56th overall after firing a 12-over 222 (72-75-75) and ranked among the top 15 in the field with 36 pars while tallying three birdies. Fellow freshman Rasmus Ronnberg finished in a tie for 80th place with an 18-over 228 (73-79-76) while recording eight birdies and 25 pars in the spring opener. Junior David Hoermann rounded out the team scorers at the event with a 20-over 230 (73-83-74) and moved up seven positions on the final day to tie for 88th.

Barton sophomore Daniel Adkins shot a six-under 204 (66-67-71), including an opening round four-under 66, to claim individual medalist honors by two strokes.
