UMO ranked fifth in final Super Region II poll

MOUNT OLIVE – Following a breakout year with a 12-6 record in dual meets, the University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling program was positioned fifth in the final Super Region II rankings released on Feb. 16.

Redshirt freshman Dallas Wilson secured the No. 1 spot in the final region rankings in the 149 weight class after boasting a 22-3 record while currently riding a seven-match winning streak. He established himself as one of the top wrestlers this season after placing eighth at the Midwest Classic, the biggest tournament in all of NCAA Division II.

Sophomore Jake Nicolosi sits second at 157 with a 17-4 record, redshirt junior Michael Vernagallo is ranked fourth at 165, sophomore Jonathan Clack is ranked fifth at 197 and redshirt senior Nico Ramirez is ranked third at 285.

No. 2 nationally ranked Lander finished the 2022-23 campaign at the top of the poll with 98 points after concluding this year with a 20-2 mark and claiming a second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Carolinas title. The Bearcats also featured six wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes. UNC-Pembroke remained second in the final rankings with 85 points after placing runner-up in the league and boasting nine ranked wrestlers, including two among the top of their weight class. Newberry finished third in the poll with 74 points, while King was slotted fourth with 58 points. Mount Olive rounded out the top five in the rankings with 44 points and five wrestlers ranked in the region.

Among the 10 teams featured, the top four programs had at least eight wrestlers individually ranked. Lander, UNC-Pembroke and Newberry were the only schools to have nine wrestlers ranked out of a possible 10 weight classes.
