Trojans fall in dual meet at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Trojans were held to three victories in a dual meet competition on Feb. 8 to fall by a score of 34-11 at Newberry in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling team closed the regular season with a 12-6 record with a 6-4 mark in conference action. This year, the Trojans set a new single-season record for dual meet and conference victories in their fourth year as a program. Meanwhile, the Wolves improved to 10-5 this season with an 8-2 overall record in league dual meets.

In the opening match at 141, the Wolves claimed an 8-3 decision to establish a 3-0 advantage before redshirt freshman Dallas Wilson answered with a 7-2 decision in the 149 weight class to tie the meet, 3-3. Newberry followed with a victory at 157 via fall, but Michael Vernagallo responded with a 16-0 technical fall to trim the deficit to 9-8 through four matches. In the following three bouts, Newberry claimed a pair of major decisions and a technical fall to extend its advantage to 22-8. At heavyweight, redshirt senior Nico Ramirez battled to a gutsy 2-0 win via decision before the Wolves closed the meet with back-to-back falls at 125 and 133 to secure the win, 34-11.
