Burnette, Hamlett sweep weekly league honors

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men’s track and field team swept the weekly accolades from the Conference Carolinas on Jan. 24, as senior Justen Burnette earned Track Athlete of the Week and sophomore Jaleal Hamlett was chosen as the Field Athlete of the Week.

A 6-foot-2 sprinter from Winston-Salem, Burnette shined over the weekend with a pair of blistering paces to set two NCAA Provisional marks. Burnette produced a season-best time and won the 200 meters with a time of 21.92 seconds, which is two-hundredths of a second faster than his previous time set in the season-opening event. He also delivered a season-best time in the semifinals of the 60-meter dash after crossing the line in 6.83 seconds to hit the NCAA standard. Burnette currently holds the fastest times in both events in the Conference Carolinas this season.

A native of Lynchburg, Va., Hamlett posted a first-place finish in the triple jump with a season-best distance of 46 feet, six inches on his second attempt while competing at the Finn Pincus Invitational. His mark set on Saturday in the event ranks first in the Conference Carolinas during the indoor season.
