Trojans fifth in Super Region II rankings

MOUNT OLIVE – Behind a 9-3 record in dual meets this season, the University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling team sits fifth in the second Super Region II rankings released Jan. 19.

Lander remains in the top position after featuring five wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes. The Bearcats also sit No. 5 overall in the national rankings with a 13-2 mark this season. UNC Pembroke continues to rank second with nine ranked individuals, including three positioned at No. 1 in their weight class. Newberry climbed four slots to sit third with 61 points, while King jumped one spot with 58 points to take fourth in the rankings. Mount Olive rounded out the top five with 57 points and eight wrestlers ranked in the region.

Among the 10 teams featured, the top six had at least eight individuals ranked. Lander and UNC Pembroke were the only schools to have nine wrestlers ranked out of a possible 10 weight classes.

Redshirt freshman Dallas Wilson leaped four positions from the previous poll to No. 2 overall in the 149 weight class with a 16-3 record. Redshirt junior Michael Vernagallo remained second in the rankings at 157 with a 13-4 mark.
