Burnette hits NCAA provisional mark; Trojans record three wins

SALEM, Va. (Jan. 21) – Senior Justen Burnette delivered another NCAA provisional mark in the 200 meters on Jan. 21, as the Trojans secured three victories at the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke College.

Burnette claimed the event win in the 200m after producing a blistering pace of 21.92 seconds, which is two-hundredths of a second faster than his time set in the season-opening meet. A native of Winston-Salem, he currently holds the fastest marks in both the 60-meter dash and 200 meters in the conference. Burnette also placed fifth in the 60m finals after crossing the line in 6.96 on Saturday.

Sophomore Jaleal Hamlett registered a first-place finish in the triple jump behind a season-best mark of 46 feet, six inches on his second attempt. The 2022 Freshman of the Year, Hamlett holds the top distance in the event this year in the Conference Carolinas.

In the shot put, junior Joshua Faison collected first overall with a distance of 53 feet, four inches on his fifth attempt. Senior Dorian Tolbert improved his conference qualifying mark 43 feet, three inches on his third attempt and moved to ninth all-time in program history. Sophomore Alex Smith-Fort’e also increased his distance to 43 feet, one inch.

Sophomore Aman Tsegay posted a league qualifying mark in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:07.55, while junior Joshua Morell reached the conference mark in the 400 meters after crossing the line in 51.58.

Freshman Jason Hart improved his league standard in the 200 meters and placed fifth after crossing the line in 22.40, which ranks eighth all-time in UMO history.

Sophomore Israel Long improved his conference qualifying mark in the weight throw and moved to fifth all-time at UMO with a distance of 53 feet, two inches on his final attempt. He sits second in the conference in the weight throw behind teammate Smith-Fort’e.
