UMO women’s tennis is conference favorite

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive, the defending Conference Carolinas champion, was selected No. 1 in the preseason league women’s tennis poll, which was released by the conference office on Jan. 18.

In 2022, Mount Olive posted a 17-3 overall record with a perfect 11-0 mark in conference play while earning a bid into the NCAA Tournament. This season the Trojans feature five returners while adding five freshmen under second-year head coach Carlos Lora.

Players to watch for the Trojans during the 2023 season include Ingrid Montserrat, a senior from Tarragona, Spain. She was 2022 Second Team All-Conference Carolinas, 2021 First Team All-Conference Carolinas and 2021 Conference Carolinas All-Tournament Team. Another senior to watch is Liza Voloshyna, a senior from Kherson, Ukraine. She was 2022 Third Team All-Conference Carolinas and 2021 First Team All-Conference Carolinas. A newcomer to watch is Oriana Izarra, a freshman from Valencia, Venezuela.

The Trojans were chosen as the preseason favorite in the league with eight of 11 first place votes in the poll. Erskine was slotted second in the rankings with two first place nods after finishing runner-up in the league tournament last season. Emmanuel was tabbed third in the poll and received the final first place vote, while Belmont Abbey and Francis Marion rounded out the top five in the poll.

The Conference Carolinas championship is set for April 21-23 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
