Harris earns defensive player honor for second straight week

MOUNT OLIVE – For a second consecutive week, University of Mount Olive women’s basketball junior Laila Harris was selected the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week by the league office on Dec. 20.

Harris totaled 15 rebounds, five blocks and five steals last week, as the Trojans battled in three games including two conference contests. She also averaged 15.3 points per game and set a new career-high with 23 points.

On Dec. 14, Harris posted a season-high four blocks with six rebounds (five defensive), two steals and a career-high 23 points in a 71-65 comeback overtime win over Emmanuel. The Englewood, N.J. native followed up with 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and one block in 33 minutes at King on Dec. 17. Harris closed the week with 11 points, three rebounds and one steal in 29 minutes against No. 15-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Dec. 19.

Harris joins Chowan graduate student Destiny Robinson as the only player to garner the accolade multiple times this season. She ranks second in the conference with 19 blocks and has tallied at least two blocks in six games. Harris also remains in the top five in the league in scoring with 14.3 points per game and field-goal percentage at 46.9.
