Mount Olive competes at Wasps Open

EMORY, Va. – The Trojans featured nine wrestlers in seven different weight classes on Dec. 18 in the annual Wasps Open hosted by Emory & Henry.

The Mount Olive women’s wrestling program finished fifth overall in a field of 12 teams with five wrestlers placing in the top five in their weight class. The event featured No. 1 ranked King, No. 7 Presbyterian and No. 16 Emmanuel.

In the 143 weight class, freshman Skyelar Smith posted a 2-2 record and placed third overall. She suffered a 10-0 technical fall to Ana Luciano of King, who ranks No. 2 nationally at 136 this season. Smith rebounded with a victory via fall over Skie Roulo of Ferrum before losing by fall in the third round to Marsiol Nugent of Tar Heel Wrestling Club. In her final bout, she posted a 3-1 win by decision against Gabriella Shevlin of Presbyterian.

Freshman Isabel Rodriguez also registered a 2-2 mark to finish fifth while competing at 123. After a bye in the first round, she notched a win by fall over Dorothy Gerrell of Emmanuel. Rodriguez was defeated by Catherine Bertrand of Presbyterian via fall, who ranks eighth nationally in the weight class. In the fifth round, she suffered another loss by fall to No. 4 ranked Melanie Mendoza of King before securing fifth place with an 11-0 technical fall victory against Olivia Waller of Presbyterian.

The 191 weight class featured four entries, including freshman Jada Arnold, who recorded a 1-3 record to finish third. She claimed a 12-2 technical fall in the first round versus Brittney Reed of Emory & Henry.

Freshman Chloe Lawler placed fourth at 136 after notching a 1-3 mark in a field of five wrestlers. She produced her lone win of the tournament in the third round with a victory via fall over Stephanie Castro of Lincoln Memorial.

In the 155 weight class, freshman Isabella Kessey finished fifth and secured one win during the competition. She registered a victory by fall against Jordan Wilson of Ferrum in the third round.
