Trojans defeat Montreat at home

MOUNT OLIVE – Behind five victories on the mat on Nov. 16, the University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling team claimed a 24-18 victory over Montreat in a non-conference dual meet hosted at Kornegay Arena.

With the win, the Trojans improved to 2-0 overall after competing in their first-ever home dual meet. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers, also in their inaugural season, dropped to 0-1 after competing in their first-ever dual meet.

The event featured seven head-to-head matches between the two programs with the Trojans collecting a pair of wins via forfeit at 101 and 191.

UMO took an early five-point advantage following a win by freshman Cheyenne Lyle at 101 before both sides turned in a double forfeit at the 109 weight class.

Montreat freshman Chloe Carver trimmed the deficit to 5-4 after posting a 10-0 win via technical fall over freshman Jillian Timberlake at 116. The Cavaliers grabbed the lead 7-6 at 123 on a 13-4 decision win by freshman Trinity Howard over fellow freshman Brooke Hermel.

UMO rallied after freshman Isabel Rodriguez put together a dominant performance with a pin at 2:15 in the 130-pound weight class over freshman Isabella Hoffman to take an 11-7 advantage. Freshman Chloe Lawler also delivered a 10-5 decision at 136 against freshman Michaiah Allen to give UMO a 14-8 lead.

Montreat answered with back-to-back wins via fall to retake the lead by an 18-14 margin. At 170, Trojan freshman Aleksandra Bieszczad recorded a dynamic performance by posting a win by fall at 0:53 over sophomore Mina Hicks. Freshman Jada Arnold earned the final five points by forfeit in the 191 weight class to secure the 24-18 win.
