Trojans post shutout over King

MOUNT OLIVE – Sophomores Olivia Womack and Karen Barry led the University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team to a 3-0 shutout win over King in Conference Carolinas action Oct. 8 at Amon Field.

With the win, the Trojans improved to 9-4 overall with a 7-1 mark in conference play. Mount Olive holds a 6-1 record at home this year and has won the last six meetings against King. Meanwhile, the Tornado fell to 1-8-3 this season behind a 1-4-3 record in league action.

UMO controlled possession in the initial minutes of the contest and posted three corner kicks and had a pair of shots that missed the mark. After a foul, senior Riley Baker delivered a free kick into the box at the far post and Womack headed it into the bottom-right corner to put Mount Olive ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute. King countered with three shots, including one on goal, over the next four-plus minutes. The Trojans went into halftime with a one-goal lead after King held a 7-5 shot advantage in the first half.

In the second half, UMO peppered the net with three shots on goal in the opening five minutes and tallied two corner kicks. The Trojans added to the advantage at the 50:28 mark after Barry fired a free-kick past the goalkeeper to take a 2-0 lead. In the 63rd minute, Barry registered her second goal of the game, after sending another free-kick past the outstretched hands of the goalie to extend the advantage to 3-0. The Mount Olive defense locked in for the second half and held the Tornado to zero shots in the final 45 minutes.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Solicito finished with two saves on seven shots attempted in 69:53 minutes of action, while sophomore Cailey Bruni played the final 20-plus minutes.

The Trojans out-shot the Tornado by a 15-7 margin, including an 11-2 edge in shots on goal, while also posting an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
