Mount Olive women’s soccer team downs Barton, 3-1

MOUNT OLIVE — Behind three different goal scorers, the Trojans stretch their winning streak to six-straight after defeating Barton by a 3-1 margin on Tuesday evening at Amon Field in Conference Carolinas play.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team improves to 7-3 this season behind a 5-0 record in conference action. UMO has tallied at least three goals in four-consecutive matches, while also winning the last four meetings against the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Barton drops to 3-4 overall with a 3-2 mark in league play.

In the first half, both teams registered a shot in the initial six-plus minutes before the Trojans applied pressure on offense with three corner kicks and two attempts on goal. At the 27:11-mark, senior Ashley Lindsay scored on a header off a corner kick delivered into the box from fellow senior Maelwenn Gaiffas to give Mount Olive a 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs would be held to one shot over the final 15-plus minutes, as the UMO took a one-goal lead into halftime.

Mount Olive added to the advantage in the 54th minute, as sophomore Tianna Hill crossed the ball across the face of the goal before sophomore Delia Allwood notched her team-leading seventh goal of the season, 2-0. In the final 10 minutes of the match, freshman Gabby Marshall recorded her first collegiate goal after floating a shot into the top-right corner of the net to extend the lead at the 83:22-mark, 3-0. Just under three minutes later, Barton ended the scoreless drought after sophomore Taylor Smith saw her shot cross the goal-line in the 87th minute, 3-1.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Solicito collected three saves on nine shots faced in 90 minutes of action in the win.

UMO finished the match with a 17-9 shot advantage, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal, while also posting a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Trojans return to play on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they travel to North Greenville for a league match featuring two teams at the top of the table, starting at noon.
